Hai Shang Restaurant 海上酒家 sits along Pembina Highway, serving up a wide array of Chinese dishes that lean into rich, comforting flavors familiar to many locals. This full-service restaurant offers a straightforward dining experience that feels like a neighborhood spot where the kitchen’s skill and authentic tastes take center stage.

The atmosphere inside is neat and welcoming, steering clear of the overly casual or rundown vibes sometimes associated with Chinatown eateries in Winnipeg. It’s a clean, well-maintained space where staff communicate clearly and handle orders efficiently, which can make a solo meal or a family dinner feel comfortable and easygoing.

What stands out most here is the menu variety. From classic Cantonese-style soup dumplings (小笼包) and mapo tofu with meat to more adventurous choices like stir-fried pork intestines or deep-fried squid with spicy salt, the kitchen shows confidence in balancing traditional and bold flavors. Fried rice options like the beef fried rice and Fu Jian fried rice are both generous and seasoned to satisfy, making them ideal for sharing or filling up after a long day.

Visitors who lean toward seafood will appreciate the seafood and tofu hot pot or the pan-fried shrimp dishes, while those looking for a comfort-food fix might find themselves returning for the ginger beef or honey garlic chicken balls. The portion sizes tend to be hearty, which fits well if you’re dining with friends or family and want to sample multiple dishes.

Ordering here can also be a smooth experience for newcomers to the area. Staff speak good English and offer attentive service, which makes a difference when navigating a diverse menu. The restaurant is often busy in the evenings, especially on weekends, so coming a bit earlier or preparing for a short wait can improve the experience.

Overall, Hai Shang feels like the kind of place that local residents turn to when craving reliable, well-prepared Chinese food beyond the typical takeout options. It’s best suited for diners who appreciate authentic regional dishes served in a clean environment without fuss, where the focus is on quality and portion rather than trendiness or flash. Whether you’re stopping by for a casual family night out or picking up a delivery to enjoy at home, it offers flavors and a familiarity that many in Winnipeg’s Asian food scene appreciate.

Our second time to visit this place. It was AMAZING!! So far my personal best in Winnipeg. To be honest, I am new to Winnipeg, and generally disappointed by Asian food here. But this place was exceptionally good. We had chaomein, mapo tofu, fried LongLi fish, congee soup, wonton soup. All of them was top notch, and the fried fish was outstanding. Also thought the price is quite reasonable compared to other Asian places. Desert coconut tea (free) was a bonus. Highly recommending this place!

We had food delivered from Hai Shang Restaurant. Rice serverings were very generous, so we ordered way too much. The mapo dofu is a little different from our homemade version, and a delicious variation.

Found the restaurant randomly and I swear to god it’s FANTASTIC. Food was great, accommodation was awesome, and it felt like I just ate my first chinese food again. Kelly was awesome. Very nice, friendly, and accommodating. I would recommend and will definitely go back.

Wow, what a gem! We were recommended by several friends and family, and we are so thankful to finally try Hai Shang today! Definitely not your typically sorta dirty Chinese spot with grimy tables and sticky floors. This place is really well kept. The service was absolutely wonderful. We ordered the soup dumplings because of all the reviews recommended it. They were as good as advertised! Fresh and juicy, tons of flavour and great with the chili oil condiment on the table. We also had the beef brisket hot pot (best we’ve ever had) and the chow mein (again a very common recommendation online). Everything was excellent. Coconut milk with tapioca came as a complimentary dessert and was the perfect way to end our first experience at Hai Shang. We will definitely be back and have already recommended to a dozen friends. 10/10!

Where should I begin?! I have been sleeping on this place for too long. Moved to the area and this restaurant is like 4 minutes from home but this is my first time ordering from them, after watching all the TikTok videos. Server speaks English very well and actually listens and understands you, which makes the ordering process fast and efficient. She was also very nice when we came in and picked up. Total was 107.10 CAD, and look at the amount of food that we got. They told me I got a free chicken fried rice, but I did not know that they also gave two full container of white rice (one is missing from the picture), which turned out to be a lot of food lol . Food quantity and quality is superb, tastes great and is way better than Southland's. I think this is my new go-to restaurant for Chinese food from now on. Thank you very much. If you have gone to Southland, you will be able to tell the differences in term of quantity and quality, and even the price this was only for the 2 of us but looks like it's gonna take us couple days to finish them all. Restaurant was very clean inside too.

The food was amazing, lots of flavor but it was very cold in the restaurant so the food got cold fast, I couldn't take off my jacket the whole time. The servers were very nice but didn't come to our table other than to deliver the food and we had to ask for takeout containers after waiting for a while. But for the food I would definitely go back even though it is not close to me it is still one of the best Chinese restaurants in Winnipeg.

Went there for the first time. We tried soup dumplings and veg spring rolls to start. The soup dumplings were so good and the spring rolls were pretty average. For our entree, we had fried rice and chicken ( I forgot the exact name lol) it was good. The restaurant was very clean and washrooms were as well. Our server was very nice and professional. Would recommend going and trying the soup dumplings.

Absolutely delightful experience at Hai Shang Restaurant! From the moment we walked in, the elegant décor and warm atmosphere set the tone for a memorable meal. The dining area is beautifully arranged with gold tablecloths and ornate chair covers, perfect for both casual dinners and special occasions. The food was outstanding — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. We especially loved the stir-fried greens and the signature dishes that came piping hot and full of authentic taste. The staff were attentive and courteous, making sure everything was just right throughout our visit. Whether you’re craving classic Chinese cuisine or looking for a cozy spot to gather with friends and family, Hai Shang is a top choice in Winnipeg. Highly recommended!
